Understanding Ovulation
Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary. This typically happens about 14 days before the start of your next period. The egg is viable for about 12-24 hours after release, while sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days.
Your Fertile Window
Your fertile window includes the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself — a total of about 6 days each cycle. Having intercourse during this window gives you the best chance of conceiving.
When to See a Specialist
If you have been tracking ovulation and timing intercourse for 12 months (or 6 months if over 35) without success, it may be time to consult a fertility specialist. Irregular cycles or absent periods may indicate ovulation problems that require medical evaluation.
